#24: No Matter The Wreckage, Sarah Kay
"I will love you with too many commas,/ but never any asterisks."
Old books are like lovers that never get old. I just realized I’ve owned this collection for almost 10 years! It was a birthday gift from a dear friend and has been moving with me through trillion packing and unpacking since 2015.
Even when I haven’t opened the book for a long while, I always bring it with me through major moves, just as a reminder of why I started poetry. Sarah Kay is forever and always my first poetry love. When my doubts with poetry arise, I listen to her. She shows me how close poetry is if we dare to look close into our heart, listen and speak up. Had it not been for her poetry, I might not gather enough faith to write poems.
Reading Sarah’s poems now feels different from before (which was at least before COVID). By “different”, I mean more intimate and raw, almost like listening to a friend recounting her endless tales of love, loss and beauty. I guess you can rarely grow out of poetry you loved, only deeper into it.
